Memorizing God’s Word

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

Proverbs 3:5-6, the first bible verse I memorized. I remember getting closer to God and reading a lot. In my readings, there was always encouragement to memorize scripture. I didn’t really understand why, until much later on.

I chose this one after thinking through what I needed to work on the most – letting go of trying to control everything and everyone, including myself. Trust that God’s got it and I don’t need to carry it all.

It took weeks to memorize and I still wasn’t even sure why I was doing it. But finally I succeeded. Memorized! Check that box! And I went about life as usual.

Then one day I received bad news at work, all of my relationships seemed challenging, everything was just difficult and out of my hands.

As I grew more frustrated I decided to take a quiet moment to myself and Proverbs 3:5-6 popped in my head. I then repeated it over and over. Things changed after that. The circumstances were still there but my mindset toward them had changed.  My heart toward them changed.

I felt comfort and laughed to myself because I ‘got it’. The verse I memorized was like a tool to go up against all this turmoil that was hijacking my day. God’s wisdom was right there to pull from in my time of need.

What tools do you have at your disposal? Do you have any verses memorized? If you do, is it time to add another? What will it be?

Have a blessed day.
